Takahashi, Erica Mayumi; UEM; Lansac-Tôha, Fábio Amodêo; UEM; Dias, Juliana Déo; UEM; Bonecker, Claudia Costa; UEM; Velho, Luiz Felipe Machado; UEM.
This study evaluated the spatial variations in species richness and abundance of zooplankton over a hydrological cycle, and also verified the influence of physical and chemical water variables and chlorophyll-α concentrations on the abundance of these organisms. The tested hypothesis was that the zooplankton community presents higher species richness in lotic environments and higher abundance in lentic ones. One hundred forty species were identified, distributed among rotifers (88), testate amoebae (35), cladocerans (13) and copepods (4). Higher values of species richness and abundance were observed during the dry period. During both hydrological periods, the copepods presented high abundance values, due to the contribution of young stages,...

Species composition and frequency of habitat use by medium and large-sized mammals in the Brazilian Cerrado Biome, State of Tocantins Biological Sciences
Santiago, Wagner Tadeu Vieira; Fonseca, Carlos; Zanzini, Antonio Carlos da Silva; Machado, Felipe Santana; Moura, Aloysio Souza de; Fontes, Marco Aurélio Leite.
The Cerrado biome is the second largest natural vegetation type existing in Brazil after the Amazon, covering 91% of the State of Tocantins, with 30% of the territory changed as a result of the expansion of economic development areas. The substitution of natural vegetation means habitat loss on species, and may put the survival of medium and large-sized mammal species under extinction risk. These species represent significant energy demands and high requirements of area within the habitat. This study aims to assess the species composition and the frequency of use of physiognomic types of vegetation by medium and large-sized mammals. The study was conducted from 2001 to 2011 using a set of complementary and alternative techniques in fragments of seven...

Philippsen, Juliana Strieder; UEM; Benedito, Evanilde; UEM; Zawadzki, Cláudio Henrique; UEM.
The urban environment has become an object of study by ornithologists, who seek to understand the relationships between this new habitat and the birds that survive within it. Aiming to investigate the composition and richness of the avifauna present at the State University of Maringá and identify temporal changes in species composition, the obtained results were compared to the study accomplished by Krügel (1998) in this same location. Thus, we performed field samplings from August 2007 to July 2008, using transects, with visual and auditive identification. We recorded 74 species belonging to 27 families from 12 orders, during 72 hours of observation. Most species were constant in the study area. The predominant trophic categories were insectivores (46%)...

André, Edison Sanfelice; Universidade Regional de Blumenau; Bruno-Neto, Rafael; Universidade Estadual de Maringá; Marino-Neto, José; Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina; Valle, Angela Cristina do; Universidade de São Paulo; Timo-Iaria, César; Universidade de São Paulo.
Current investigation describes the behavioral and electrographic characteristics of spontaneous absence-like seizures identified in Wistar rats (referred to here as FMUSP-rats, after the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil), and characterized by spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the neocortex and the hippocampus. After consanguineous crossing directed to an increased incidence of seizures, the latter were observed in almost all F9 offspring. FMUSP-rat seizures are expressed as immobility and concomitant SWDs, oscillating between 7.5 and 12 Hz in the frontoparietal cortex and the hippocampus. Behaviorally, they are mainly associated with clonic movements of the eyes, rostrum and vibrissae, the latter ranging between 1 and 70...

Barcellos, Priscila Gomes; Rodrigues, José Ariévilo Gurgel; Queiroz, Ismael Nilo Lino de; Araújo, Ianna Wivianne Fernandes de; Benevides, Norma Maria Barros; Mourão, Paulo Antônio de Souza.
Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyceae) has biotechnologically-important sulfated-polysaccharides (Ul-SPs), but their potentials on thrombin generation (TG) are unknown. This study analyzed the structural and physical-chemical features of the Ul-SPs as modulators of TG. Proteolytic digestion yielded (13.13%) extract containing sulfate (20.43%) and total sugars (65.72%), besides ulvan consisting of rhamnose, xylose, glucose, glucuronic acid and α-/β-types glycosidic linkages as characterized by one-/two-dimensions nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Fractionation of the Ul-SPs by DEAE-cellulose chromatography yielded Ul-SP1 and Ul-SP2 (0.50 and 0.75 M NaCl, respectively) showing sulfation (15.72-18.04%) and total sugars (59.73-60.58%) consistent with the...
