Chironomidae larvae (Diptera) are one of the most important families among aquatic insects due to the higher abundance and species richness, considered an important tool for ecological studies. This study evaluated the richness of Chironomidae assemblage and related the distribution with physical and chemical variables in five lakes of the Paraná river, in the Ilha Grande National Park. There were two samplings, one in the central region and another in the marginal area of the floodplain lakes. In each region were collected six samples, five for biological analysis and one for granulometric analysis. The granulometric composition and organic matter content were the principal variables influencing the density and richness of Chironomidae. The scores of the... |

This study evaluated the spatial variations in species richness and abundance of zooplankton over a hydrological cycle, and also verified the influence of physical and chemical water variables and chlorophyll-α concentrations on the abundance of these organisms. The tested hypothesis was that the zooplankton community presents higher species richness in lotic environments and higher abundance in lentic ones. One hundred forty species were identified, distributed among rotifers (88), testate amoebae (35), cladocerans (13) and copepods (4). Higher values of species richness and abundance were observed during the dry period. During both hydrological periods, the copepods presented high abundance values, due to the contribution of young stages,... |

We aimed to perform the first survey of testate amoebae community composition in Lake Monte Alegre at São Paulo state, and contribute to mitigate the taxonomic impediment regarding the diversity of testate amoebae in Brazil. Samplings were performed in 20 sampling sites within the lake, in the limnetic and littoral regions in April 2015, using a 58 µm-meshplankton net. We identified 20 taxa of testate amoebae belonging to four families: Arcellidae (8 taxa), Centropyxidae (4 taxa), Difflugiidae (7 taxa) and Lesquereusiidae (2 taxa). The littoral region showed the highest number of taxa (n = 20), whereas in the limnetic region 11 taxa were registered. Therefore, our results evidenced the importance of testate amoebae in aquatic systems, and that further... |

The caatinga scrublands are relatively poorly-studied, and few data are available on the biome’s chiropteran fauna. The present study focuses on the bat community of the arboreal caatinga of Serra da Guia. Bats were trapped in mist-nets on three new moon nights per month between October, 2008, and September, 2009. Atotal of 157 individuals were captured, representing 12 species. Species richness estimated by Jackknife1 was 14.8. Glossophaga soricina and Carollia perspicillata were by far the most common species, accounting for 56.7% of the specimens captured. Species diversity was 1.80, while equitability was 0.72. There was no significant seasonal difference in species diversity or evenness. However, the present study recorded a clear seasonal shift in... |

Current investigation describes the behavioral and electrographic characteristics of spontaneous absence-like seizures identified in Wistar rats (referred to here as FMUSP-rats, after the Faculty of Medicine, University of São Paulo, São Paulo State, Brazil), and characterized by spike-wave discharges (SWDs) in the neocortex and the hippocampus. After consanguineous crossing directed to an increased incidence of seizures, the latter were observed in almost all F9 offspring. FMUSP-rat seizures are expressed as immobility and concomitant SWDs, oscillating between 7.5 and 12 Hz in the frontoparietal cortex and the hippocampus. Behaviorally, they are mainly associated with clonic movements of the eyes, rostrum and vibrissae, the latter ranging between 1 and 70... |

Studies on new microbial sources of cellulase and accurate assessment of the steps that increase cellulase production are essential strategies to reduce costs of various processes using such enzymes. This study aimed at the selection of cellulase-producing filamentous fungi, and at the research of parameters involving cellulase production by submerged fermentation. The first test consisted of selecting the best cellulase-producing microorganisms (FPase) in Erlenmeyer flasks containing 200 mL of specific growth medium. The next test was designed to further investigate the enzyme production in fermentation with four types of soluble sugars: glucose, lactose, sucrose and xylose. In bioreactor tests, three different inoculation strategies were analyzed. The... |

The Cerrado has a wide diversity of fauna and flora, and the knowledge of its horizontal structure, in different time intervals allows the prediction of its structural and floristic characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate the changes in structure and composition of tree community in three fragments of Cerrado with low anthropization, in an interval of 11 years at Minas Gerais state. Rectangular plots of fixed size were sampled, measuring stem diameter and height of all living arboreal individuals with diameter at 1.30 meters above ground (DBH) ≥ 5 cm. The tree vegetation dynamics study of the areas was performed, as well as the floristic analysis and the diametric structure. Considering all fragments and years of measurement, the recruitment... |

Ulva lactuca (Chlorophyceae) has biotechnologically-important sulfated-polysaccharides (Ul-SPs), but their potentials on thrombin generation (TG) are unknown. This study analyzed the structural and physical-chemical features of the Ul-SPs as modulators of TG. Proteolytic digestion yielded (13.13%) extract containing sulfate (20.43%) and total sugars (65.72%), besides ulvan consisting of rhamnose, xylose, glucose, glucuronic acid and α-/β-types glycosidic linkages as characterized by one-/two-dimensions nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments. Fractionation of the Ul-SPs by DEAE-cellulose chromatography yielded Ul-SP1 and Ul-SP2 (0.50 and 0.75 M NaCl, respectively) showing sulfation (15.72-18.04%) and total sugars (59.73-60.58%) consistent with the... |

In order to analyze the structure and dynamics of the periphytic community in Iraí reservoir, an eutrophic environment, samples were taken in two seasons: summer (April) and winter (September) of 2002, in littoral areas from three regions of the reservoir (upper, intermediary and lower). Rooted aquatic vegetation were used as sampling substrates, because they were found in all sampling sites. A total of 297 species was recorded (225 in April, 73 exclusive taxa; and 224 in September, with 72 exclusive taxa). Bacillariophyceae predominated in all regions in both seasons, in species number, as well in density. There were differences in richness among zones; intermediary and lower regions were more similar, mainly in September. The periphytic algae density... |

Understanding the plant communities affected by human activities related to urbanization is an important tool to conserve these. In this way, this study on an urban forest fragment aimed to evaluate, through a phytosociological study and investigation of the germination of the seed bank, the current forest structure, the successional strata, and the regenerative capacity of the remnant. Three different stages comprised this research, the first with a floristic survey of the entire forest remnant, then the phytosociological study of the canopy (PAP above 10 cm) and regeneration strata (PAP 5-10 cm), and at last, the study on the seed bank. The phytosociological survey of the canopy stratum presented 1,368 individuals, with 41 species distributed into 24... |

This study examined temporal and spatial (vertical) variations of composition, richness and abundance of the planktonic ciliates community in an urban and eutrophic lake, as well as identified the limnological factors involved in determining the patterns observed. To this end, samples of ciliates and measures of limnological variables were taken at different depths and hydrological periods. 35 ciliate species were identified, among which 14 species occurred in all periods and strata, being Prostomatida the most specious, followed by Gymnostomatida, Oligotrichida, Peritrichida, and Scuticociliatida. The patterns found for composition, abundance and species richness evidenced a vertical and temporal variation of these attributes. However, in general the... |
